" I help the owner(s) make more money with less stress"

Accountant or Consultant?

Working with companies and sole traders in the building and maintenance area, I help the owner(s) make more money with less stress.

In some cases the aim is to make money where none has been made before.

People in the construction and maintenance field - builders, joiners, carpenters, plumbers and so on - are often very skilled in their trade but cannot abide many of the administrative tasks of business: book keeping, VAT, tax, advertising, the paperwork of health and safety, and so on.

They may have an accountant, but the accountant is usually a distant figure who talks a foreign language and has no real reality on what running the business entails.

He tells you at the end of the year what profit you have made and how much tax has to be paid. But that is about it!

If you are having trouble, you may not talk to the accountant at all. In some cases the accountant will understand the business, but generally he does not.

I am not an accountant, although I know enough accountancy for management purposes.

The accountancy profession and the entire governmental tax and regulation regime have between them created a wall of complexity that is almost impenetrable. Accountants are generally too occupied in their own world to deal properly with their customers - the owners and managers of businesses.

When working for a business owner, the purpose of an accountant ought to be as follows: To help the owner:
  • ensure an adequate book keeping system is in place to provide proper information
  • calculate his profitability on a regular basis (not just yearly- monthly perhaps)
  • establish the causes of changes in profitability so that correction or reinforcement can be made.
  • make changes wherever needed to be successful
  • frequently review his purposes and progress in attaining them
  • calculate and minimise tax liability
  • be aware of and fulfill legal duties

Most accountants are capable of doing much of this dependent on their experience in a particular industry. But they rarely do. This is firstly because accountants tend to be preoccupied with end of year accounts and tax returns. And secondly, because an accountant has never run a building business and he has very little reality on what works and does not work.

That's where I come in:

  1. I have run a business in the building & maintenance area for more than 20 years.
  2. I have 10 years experience of consultancy to similar businesses
  3. I have experience in dealing with insolvency & unprofitability
  4. I have a good basic knowledge of accountancy and book keeping, sufficient for effective action.
  5. Above all I have a well-developed technique for locating and dealing with the causes of difficulty for people in the construction industry

In summary I help create a profitable business. The accountant usually just measures the profitability or otherwise.
